I live 7 miles to pavement, and the latch mechanism looked like a lump of dirt. The outer handle comes off with the two bolts and connectors removed, and the latch by a couple more bolts, and the window channel (brilliantly in place with a flexible rubber link holding the metal channel in place for service) easily sliding out of the way. I'd suggest that on an older truck like these are, to just take the latch out and clean/lube it while the inner door panel is off and everything is apart. I found out on this forum that removing and thoroughly cleaning and lubricating the latch mechanism will be the remedy (not for your vandalism issue, but for difficult thus breaking handles). My outer handles kept breaking, metal or plastic. I bought 'replacement' door handles from Amazon and the guy at the shop laughed and said "I bet I can guess what you paid for these" followed by $20 to $25 - he was right. They're designed differently and even weigh more compared to aftermarket parts. Make sure it's wired properly.IMO it's best to stick with OEM parts (when you can) because as someone mentioned in a previous post, 'These' exterior door handles will last. Just plug it in and check it before finishing your installation.
All-in-all: not as good as a Toyota OEM but it seems like it will get the job done. Dorman confirmed that this is how some of the aftermarket parts operate. So, if you unlock the lock using the switch and then try to manually push the lock down to lock it, there will be resistance from the motor. This unit makes a kind of high pitched noise when the door unlocks that sounds "cheap." It also stays actuated for a few seconds after being locked/unlocked which is unlike the OEM equipment. Additionally, the motor and gears in this are different from the OEM piece. We had to remove the unit after we installed it, cut the old wiring harness off the OEM faulty unit, and reattach it to the new unit reversing the motor wires (I believe it was green and black but I'm not sure). The main wiring harness is not good quality and one of the wires pulled out during initial installation. Using either door lock rocker switch or alarm remote if we pushed "lock" this actuator would unlock and if we pushed "unlock" the actuator would lock.
